6 Ways to spend your day in Miami

Even though I grew up in Miami, being back often makes me feel like a tourist. I’m sure you’re thinking I’m a little crazy, but it’s true. SO MUCH HAS CHANGED. New places have opened, new roads have been built, I’m now old enough to go places I couldn’t go before and also old enough to know what I want (at least for the time being).

I’m feel very lucky to have the experience of being a local as well as the joys of exploring a “new” city. By combining what I know and what I have come to know on my move back here, I have compiled a list of fun and relatively cheap things to do around the city.

1.Perez Art Museum

With free admission to everyone on the second Saturday of every month as well as the first Thursday of every month.  PAMM offers as much too see on the outside as it does on the inside. The inside of the museum features contemporary exhibits from artists from all around the world. These exhibits change every quarter, so there is always something new to see.  The outside features beautiful hanging gardens and hammock chairs and a great view of downtown and the beaches. Here you will also find the PAMM restaurant – Verde – featuring a menu of locally inspired dishes and handcrafted cocktails.  Aside from this special events – outdoor screenings and soirees with cash bars – are often held.

2. Yoga with a view

If yoga is your thing, I have found that there are a million (free/cheap – $5 donation) options to choose from all around the city. However, my absolute favourites have been the ones with the best views. Here are some options: Yoga Under the Sky – This class takes place every Saturday at South Pointe Park in South Beach (5:00pm). The sounds and scenery are amazing and the instructor – Hilary – will make you want to come back for more. Green Monkey Yoga – they offer a couple of free options during the week – a class on Wednesday at Collins Park (6:00pm) offering a view of the art deco streets of South Beach and a class on Sundays at the Mondrian Hotel (10:00am) which takes place on the pool deck looking out into the water and it is absolutely wonderful. Yoga at the Setai Hotel – Though reservations are required, any hotel guest or resident of the Setai can enjoy 60-minutes of calming beach-side yoga led by a Thai instructor. Classes are offered every Friday, Saturday and Sunday with complimentary water bottle and towel.

3. Wynwood Art Walk

Occurring every second Saturday of the month, Wynwood Art District is the place to be. The doors of every restaurant and gallery open up their doors for all locals and tourist alike to spend their days in this up-and-coming neighborhood. At 6:00pm Food trucks are in business and the aroma of wonderful food fills the air and local vendors line the streets to showcase their products. Everything is open late on this day so you can enjoy the day exploring all around but if you cant make it to Second Saturdays, you can venture here any day of the week and enjoy the Sunny weather and and the murals that line every corner of this community.

4. Cauley Square

Located in the former railroad town of Goulds and its a beautiful combination of arts and crafts with Old South Florida. Cauley Square is lined by antique shops, craft stores and a delightful tea room and spa. During the day you can enjoy the area covered in trees and adorned with fountains – perfect for pictures. At night, you will find twinkle lights illuminating the area and Frank Sinatra filling the air – perfect for a romantic walk.

5. Pinecrest Gardens Farmer’s Market

Home of the old parrot Jungle – the Pinecrest Gardens Farmer’s Market opens up every Sunday to host vendors from all over Miami. The Farmer’s market offers everything from fresh produce and herbs to baked goods and all sorts of other foods like Ceviche and BBQ. It also hosts local artists who bring anything from home decor to body care products and the most beautiful plants. Whether you come with your family, friends or on your own, you’re sure to find something that catches your eye while taking in the view of the surrounding trees and foliage.

6. Live Jazz at M.O.C.A.

MOCA – Museum of Contemporary Art in North Miami offers free entrance to their concerts on the last Friday of every month. The concerts take place on the plaza outside and its a great way to discover new music and artists while enjoying the fresh air. On any other day you can enjoy the art and exhibits for only $5 – $3 for students and seniors.
